The Cutbona Boat Owners Union on Wednesday resolved to impose a fine of Rs two lakhs on erring boat owners violating the government's ban on fishing with LED lights.
Boat owners, however, demanded that the government should ensure an uniform ban on fishing with LED lights all along the western coast, with some of the members saying that the state government should not single them out when their counterparts in the neighbouring states use LED lights for fishing.
The annual general body meeting of the Cutbona Boat Owners Union was held at the Cutbona fishing jetty on Wednesday morning. Chaired by Union President, Savio D'Silva, the boat owners discussed the issue of a boat owner, who was accused by the boat owners for using LED lights for fishing.
After much discussion on the issue, the Union arrived at the decision to fine Rs 2 lakh on any member of the Union, who have been found fishing with LED lights. The Association also took the decision that any boat owner
violating the government ban will not be allowed to
auction the fish at the Cutbona fishing jetty.
After the meeting, Savio pointed out that he had called the annual general meeting of the Union after some boat owners complained that a particular owner of a fishing boat built of steel was using LED lights while fishing. "The Union is clear that the ban should be uniform not only in the state, but across the west coast of India. It should not happen that some boat owners using lights come with good catch while the smaller boats return empty handed", Savio said.
He, however, pointed out that boat owners operating in the state are very concerned with reports emanating from fishing jetties down south of India that fishing boats are still using LED lights. "We want the government to ensure that the ban is enforced all along the coast. Otherwise, the ban would become a mockery", he added.
